BROOD BITCHES
A bitch is not bred in our kennel until such time WE are satisfied she can not only hold her own, but also do better than the Ft. Ch. & F.C. coming back from trials. We can trial only a limited number of dogs, due to distance (Upper Michigan is our nearest, a 12 hour drive one way), so we tend to send mostly males, rather than females to competitions.
The bitch, as do all our dogs, has to have:

Superior nose, for varying conditions, from very hot, to very cold, and everything in between.

Hunt and desire. We don’t start a rabbit for our dogs, that is THEIR job.

Intelligence. An intelligent dog will learn where the rabbits hang out, what to do in certain circumstances and know how to come home. Due to their intelligence, some dogs as they mature, become “rabbit wise”. An intelligent dog knows when to change course, when to stick with the check area. An intelligent hound knows how to read body language of his pack mates.

Have a degree of independence, even in the pack, and not be dependent on the pack mates.

Proper physical built. Not short coupled, not too long. Proper set of legs. Proper width and depth of chest. Proper set of eyes.
We do not breed for colour – colour doesn’t make the dog, as it doesn’t make the man. However, most everyone has a preference, so if you do, let us know ( although I do get plenty of folks who tell me “they don’t care if the dog is pink, as long as it can run a rabbit").
